Recalls and Secondhand Safety

CPSC Child Product Recalls
When accepting hand-me-downs, or purchasing second hand or used items for children, there are some important considerations.

  • Has the product ever been recalled and if so, was the appropriate repair(s) done?  Not sure, visit the CPSC Recall Site and search for the item.
  • Do you know the history of the item?
  • Does the item have ALL the parts it originally came with?  An instruction manual?  Sometimes, manuals can be found online or by calling the manufacturer, but not always, and you need the model number.
  • If a car seat, what is the expiration date (it should be on a sticker on the side, bottom, or back of the seat)?  Has it ever been in ANY accident, no matter how "minor"?  If so, it should not be used.  Do the straps work properly?  Does it have all the necessary tethers?  Inspect it for any obvious signs of damage.  Consider the cleanliness of the padding, straps, and seat itself as well and how easily, if at all, it can be cleaned. Car seats are covered with all manner of bodily fluids at some point in their lifetimes!
  • Never accept or purchase an item that has been recalled.  It is illegal to sell a recalled product.
  • Never accept or purchase an item that does not have ALL the parts it was originally sold with and an instruction manual for proper and safe use.
  • Be careful with dollar store purchases.  Toys, games, and clothing are often of inferior quality and may pose a significant hazard to children.
